Review of the movie "Overlord" (2018)

The fantastic horror Overlord was far from one of the most anticipated films of this season, but it still made a bit of noise, by the way. The film doesn't have a star cast or a famous director, and most of its advertising consisted of posters. A famous personality who advertised the tape, so to speak, was J. J. Abrams, better known to viewers for the space franchises "Star Trek" and "Star Wars", who acted as a producer here.

But since the first screening, the film has received a lot of praise and high marks. They promised that the viewer would find a sea of blood, action, and generally a driving blockbuster. After the criticism, ordinary viewers also began to evaluate the military's confrontation against humanoid monsters. Most of the audience also praised the film, and I also decided to check out what was special about this film. What happened? Read on.

Everyone praised the action, so I'll start with it. Yes, the action in this movie is really at a great level, as is the visual part in general. The shootings looked realistic, but how can you not remember the scene of the soldiers disembarking from the plane. It's played and shown beautifully, and it's clear that it's not easy for the characters and the big screen allows you to feel the tense atmosphere.

Speaking of the atmosphere and genre of this picture, the trailers were misleading. They focus more on the fantasy component, but the film consists of about 80% of a demonstration of the horror of war (real horror, not counting monsters). The painting perfectly shows the suffering of people caught in the middle of a military conflict. When I heard from other viewers about the bloody action in the film, I thought it would mostly be with monsters, but in fact, for the most part, the bloody mess here is shown through a demonstration of war. Explosions, shootings, severed limbs, shootouts - all this, combined with the interactions of the characters, well demonstrates the horrors of war and human suffering.

The demonstration of the "military" genre sometimes fascinated me so much that I completely forgot that there was fiction in the tape. A dose of horror is also added to these genres, which not only scares a few times, but also creates a tense atmosphere. But if military actions create tension through the display of war, then the horror component here comes from fiction and creates tension of a slightly different nature. There are scenes in the film that clearly demonstrate two types of tension. A few funny moments are added to all this, but they are shown at the right time, and do not spoil the overall tone of the picture. "Overlord" can be perceived as a genre experiment. Everything looks kind of organic, but in my opinion, the military genre is still dominant here and even better than fiction. This sometimes makes the fantastic part seem superfluous here.

The characters here are good, and the interaction between them also looks good. There may be an opinion that the team of warriors is somewhat cliched, there is a cool soldier here-a commander, a humorist, a coward, and so on. But even such a scheme works here, because each of the characters has his own character, and sometimes you even sympathize with them. The actors didn't stand out much, but they played their roles well.

The plot here is not bad and somehow interesting. But I didn't feel any dynamics in him, he couldn't capture attention. In addition, some points are not well explained to the viewer. There seemed to be certain explanations, but it looked like "get off". Yes, maybe certain explanations didn't play a big role here, but if they had already been given a definite beginning, then it would be better to bring it to an end, wouldn't it? I think 5-7 minutes of additional timekeeping could be allocated for this. Well, I'll add that the musical accompaniment plays almost no role here, but everything is fine with the sound editing.

My rating is 7/10. This is a genre mix of pure water, with spectacular action, good atmosphere and characters. In general, this is a good fantastic action-horror, but the lack of definite explanations, interest in the plot and a not very successful genre combination made me lower my rating.

To feel the atmosphere and watch the best action and live characters, you can visit the cinema. Certain moments of "Overlord" are much more impressive to look on a big screen than on a small one. However, the final decision is yours, of course, and I cannot fully recommend this film. https://1winind.in/1win-app/
